byname LOUIS THE BLIND, French LOUIS L"AVEUGLE (b. c. 880/882, Autun?, Fr.--d. September 928, Arles, Fr.), king of Provence and, from 901 to 905, Frankish emperor whose short-lived tenure marked the failure to restore the Carolingian dynasty to power in Italy.
Louis was a son of Boso, king of Provence, and Irmingard, daughter of the Frankish emperor Louis II, the last of the elder male line of the Carolingian dynasty. The emperor Charles III the Fat took Louis under his protection on Boso"s death in 887, and, although Charles was deposed that same year, Louis was recognized as king of Provence in 890. In 900 Louis was called to Italy by a group of nobles who were opposed to the rule of the Italian king Berengar of Friuli; in October, Louis was elected king of the Lombards at Pavia and, a few months later, in February 901, received the imperial crown from Pope Benedict IV at Rome. In 902, however, Berengar captured Louis, who was forced to leave the country.
Louis attempted to reconquer Italy in 904. He secured the submission of Lombardy but in July 905 was captured at Verona by Berengar, who blinded him and sent him back to Provence, where he remained until his death.

LUDWIG (III.) DER BLINDE, Konig der Provence (890-927), Kaiser. Der Sohn Bosos und Irmingards wurde wohl um 880 geboren. Seine Mutter bemuhte sich darum, da? Kaiser Karl III. noch 887 ihren Sohn in das karolingische Haus aufnahm und so eine kunftige Herrschaft L.s legitimierte. Unter dem Schutz des ostfrankischen Konigs und spateren Kaisers Arnulf wurde L. dann 890 von den Gro?en der Provence auf Empfehlung von Papst Stephan V. zum Konig erhoben. Im Herbst 900 zog er auf Einladung der oberitalienischen Gro?en, die mit Berengar I. unzufrieden waren, nach Italien, wo er noch aus dem Erbe seiner Gro?mutter uber reichen Familienbesitz verfugte. L. vertrieb Berengar und lie? sich Anfang Oktober 899 in Pavia als Konig des Regnum Italiae huldigen. Zu Beginn des Jahres 901 zog er nach Rom und wurde dort von Papst Benedikt IV. zum Kaiser geweiht. In den Zusammenhang imperialer Ambitionen gehort wohl auch die Ehe L.s mit der Tochter des byzantinischen Kaisers Leon VI., Anna, die noch wahrend L.s erstem Italienaufenthalt geschlossen worden sein mu? (Sohn: Karl Konstantin). - Schon im Fruhjahr gelang jedoch Berengar die Vertreibung L.s, der sich eidlich verpflichten mu?te, nicht mehr nach Italien zuruckzukehren; trotzdem versuchte L. 905 einen weiteren Italienzug, bei dem Berengar ihn ergreifen und blenden lassen konnte. In der Provence fuhrte L. eine Schattendasein, die eigentliche Herrschaft ging an Markgraf Hugo von Vienne uber. Gestorben ist L. zwischen dem 25.12. 927 und September 928.
