Arnulf OF METZ, SAINT,

French SAINT ARNOUL DE METZ (b. c. 580, near Nancy [France]--d. July 18, 640?, Remiremont; feast day August 16 or 19), bishop of Metz and, with Pepin I, the earliest known ancestor of Charlemagne.

A Frankish noble, Arnulf gave distinguished service at the Austrasian court under Theudebert II (595-612). In 613, however, with Pepin, he led the aristocratic opposition to Brunhild that led to her downfall and to the reunification of Frankish lands under Chlotar II. About the same year, he became bishop.

From 623, again with Pepin, now mayor of the Austrasian palace, Arnulf was adviser to Dagobert I, before retiring (629?) to become a hermit. Arnulf"s son Ansegisel married Pepin"s daughter Begga; the son of this marriage, Pepin II, was Charlemagne"s great-grandfather.

St. Arnulf of Metz

Statesman, bishop under the Merovingians, born c. 580; died c. 640. His parents belonged to a distinguished Frankish family, and lived in Austrasia, the eastern section of the kingdom founded by Clovis. In the school in which he was placed during his boyhood he excelled through his talent and his good behaviour. According to the custom of the age, he was sent in due time to the court of Theodebert II, King of Austrasia (595-612), to be initiated in the various branches of the government. Under the guidance of Gundulf, the Mayor of the Palace, he soon became so proficient that he was placed on the regular list of royal officers, and among the first of the kings ministers. He distinguished himself both as a military commander and in the civil administration; at one time he had under his care six distinct provinces. In due course Arnulf was married to a Frankish woman of noble lineage, by whom he had two sons, Anseghisel and Clodulf. While Arnulf was enjoying worldly emoluments and honours he did not forget higher and spiritual things. His thoughts dwelled often on monasteries, and with his friend Romaricus, likewise an officer of the court, he planned to make a pilgrimage to the Abbey of Lerins, evidently for the purpose of devoting his life to God. But in the meantime the Episcopal See of Metz became vacant. Arnulf was universally designated as a worthy candidate for the office, and he was consecrated bishop of that see about 611. In his new position he set the example of a virtuous life to his subjects, and attended to matters of ecclesiastical government. In 625 he took part in a council held by the Frankish bishops at Reims. With all this Arnulf retained his station at the court of the king, and took a prominent part in the national life of his people. In 613, after the death of Theodebert, he, with Pepin of Landen and other nobles, called to Austrasia Clothaire II, King of Neustria. When, in 625, the realm of Austrasia was entrusted to the kings son Dagobert, Arnulf became not only the tutor, but also the chief minister, of the young king. At the time of the estrangement between the two kings, and 625, Arnulf with other bishops and nobles tried to effect a reconciliation. But Arnulf dreaded the responsibilities of the episcopal office and grew weary of court life. About the year 626 he obtained the appointment of a successor to the Episcopal See of Metz; he himself and his friend Romaricus withdrew to a solitary place in the mountains of the Vosges. There he lived in communion with God until his death. His remains, interred by Romaricus, were transferred about a year afterwards, by Bishop Goeric, to the basilica of the Holy Apostles in Metz.

Of the two sons of Arnulf, Clodulf became his third successor in the See of Metz. Anseghisel remained in the service of the State; from his union with Begga, a daughter of Pepin of Landen, was born Pepin of Heristal, the founder of the Carlovingian dynasty. In this manner Arnulf was the ancestor of the mighty rulers of that house. The life or Arnulf exhibits to a certain extent the episcopal office and career in the Merovingian State. The bishops were much considered at court; their advice was listened to; they took part in the dispensation of justice by the courts; they had a voice in the appointment of royal officers; they were often used as the king"s ambassadors, and held high administrative positions. For the people under their care, they were the protectors of their rights, their spokesmen before the king and the link uniting royalty with its subjects. The opportunities for good were thus unlimited; and Arnulf used them to good advantage.

Arnulf"s wife (and mother of Duke Ansgise) was Dode (Clothilde); she became a nun at Treves in 612, the same year that Arnulf became Bishop of Metz. Arnulf and Dode were married about 596.{-Arnulf"s ancestry is from Frederick L. Weis, "Ancestral Roots..."(1950); there are several alternate ancestries known (see notes, Chart 297H)} Arnulf was buried at Hadendum an der Mozel, and later at St. Arnulf"s Church at Metz. He died at Horenberg Monastery, Wasenwald. The birth date shown here is approximate. [See also ID2589!] Arnulf was Mayor of the Palace and tutor of Dagobert, hence a courtier of high standing in the Austrasian palace. He was Bishop of Metz, Mayor of the Palace and tutor of Dogobert, tonsured late summer 613. He may have been married "Abt 596". He may have died 18 Jul 641. [This child may not have the parents indicated; the first source indicates that Bodegisel II is the father of Saint Arnoulf; the second source says that Ansbert is the father of St Arnoulf; I have left the two lines in tact and have identified Dode as the daughter of one side of Charlemagne"s family tree to keep both in this database. Notes

The Hull University project on INTERNET also has him as the son of Duke BAUDGISE II. However, they consider this duke to be a legendary figure. The project contributes the following biography for Arnulf : Feast day, 19 August. This Arnulf (Arnoul) passed his earlier life at the court of Theodebert II, king of Austrasia; through the marriage of his elder son with a daughter of Pepin of Landen (St. Begga), he became an ancestor of the Carolingian dynasty. At the age of thirty, he wanted to retire from public life, but instead in 614 he was chosen Bishop of Metz, though still a layman. He continued to act as adviser to King Chlotar II, whom he had helped to the Frankish throne, and was tutor to his son Dagobert. Arnulf made further attempts to resign his offices, but it was not till 629 that he was able to retire to the Vosges mountains. Here his friend St. Romaric had preceded him and begun the monastic community at Habend that was later called Remiremont. St. Arnulf settled near by, and lived there till his death twelve years later. -The Avenel Dictionary of the Saints, Donald Attwater (New York; Avenel Books, 1965).

Weis" "Ancestal Roots . . ." (190:8) also has him as the son of Duke BAUDGISE II.

St. Arnulf

d.c. 640
Feastday: July 18

Bishop and member of the court of the Frankish king Theodebert II of Austrasia, sometimes called Arnuiph or Arnulf of Metz. A noble, Arnulf married Doda, and their son was Ansegisel. Ansegisel married Beggia, the daughter of Pepin of Landen, starting the Carolingian dynasty of France. Doda became a nun, and Arnulf made plans to enter a monastery but was named the bishop of Nletz around 616. He continued his court services, making Clotaire of Neustria the king of Austrasia. He also served as counselor to Dagobert, King Clotaire"s son. In 626, Arnulf retired to a hermitage at Remiremont, France.

Arnulf (Arnoul, Arnold) of Metz B (RM)

Died 640. Arnulf was a courtier of the Austrasian King Theodebert II, a valiant warrior, and a valued adviser. He married the noble Doda (the marriage of his son Ansegisel to Begga, daughter of Blessed Pepin of Landen, produced the Carolingian line of kings of France).

Arnulf desired to become a monk at LÂrins. However, when his wife took the veil and Arnulf was at the point of entering LÂrins, he was appointed bishop of Metz about 610. He played a prominent role in affairs of state, was one of those instrumental in making Clotaire of Neustria king of Austrasia, and was chief counselor to Dagobert, son of King Clotaire, when the king appointed him king of Austrasia.

About 626, Arnulf resigned his see and retired to a hermitage near the abbey of Remiremont (Benedictines, Delaney, Encyclopedia).

In art, Saint Arnulf is portrayed as a bishop with a coat of mail under his cope. He may also be shown (1) with a fish having a ring in its mouth; (2) blessing a burning castle; or (3) washing the feet of the poor (Roeder). He is venerated at Remiremont. Like Saint Antony, Arnulf is invoked to find lost articles. He is also the patron saint of music, millers, and brewers (Roeder).

This Arnulf (Arnoul) passed his earlier life atthe court of Theodebert II, king of Austrasia; throught the marriageof his elder son with a daughter of Pepin of Landen (St. Begga), hebecame an ancestor of the Carolingian dynasty. Arnulf made further attempts to resign hisoffices, but it was not till 629 that he was able to retire to theVosges mountains. Here his friend St. Romaric had preceded him andbegun the monastic community at Habend that was later calledRemiremont. St. Arnulf settled near by, and lived there till his deathtwelve years later.

Here is what Butler has to say about him:

St. Arnulf or Arnoul, Bishop of Metz (c. AD 643) - July 18

This Arnulf, born of noble parents and educated in learning and piety, was called to the court of King Theodebert II of Austrasia, in which he was equally admired for prudence in council and valour in the field:he joined the virtues of a Christian with the duties of a statesman. Having married a noble lady called Doda, he had by her two sons,Clodulf and Ansegisel; by the latter"s marriage with a daughter of Bd Pepin (called "of Landen") the Carlovingian kings of France descended from St. Arnoul. Fearing the danger of entangling his soul in the many affairs which passed through his hands, he wanted to retire to the monastery of Lerins, but was stopped by the clergy and people of Metz demanding him for their bishop. He was therefore consecreated about the year 610,and while fulfilling his new duties with exactness, he continued to take a prominent part in public affairs: as, for example, on the death of Theodebert and his brother Theirry, when with other nobles he called Clotaire of Neustria to the throne of Austrasia. Ten years later Clotaire divided his dominions, and giving charge of Austrasia to his son Dagobert, appointed St. Arnoul his chief counsellor. The holy bishop did not for long continue to guide this prince; he asked and received permission to quit the court, which he had long wished to do (Dagobert at first threatened to cut Arnoul"s son"s head off if hewent away). He then resigned his bishopric, and retired with a friend, St.Romaricus, to a hermitage in the Vosges mountains, later the monastery of Remiremont. Here he died.

The confusion in secondary literature over the father of St.Arnulf is due to the fact that medieval sources give different accounts of his parentage. The earliest life of Arnulf perhaps written in the late 7th or early 8th century does not name his parents (a later source says this was copied by Jerome (Hieronymus) son of Charles Martel). So in this respect you are right: Arnulf"s father is unknown. Information

The Carolingians, a family of Ripuarian FRANKS that took its name from CHARLES MARTEL, the grandfather of CHARLEMAGNE, were the most important dynasty in early medieval Europe. They had their origins in the union of the family of Arnulf, bishop of Metz, with that of Pepin of Landen (d. c.640), hereditary mayor of the palace in AUSTRASIA, during the early 7th century.
